What is the method to count mistakes in Shorthand or Stenography test?

In shorthand or stenography tests, accuracy is crucial to accurately transcribe spoken language into a written form. To count mistakes during such tests, a systematic approach is required. Here’s a method you can follow:

      1. Transcription Comparison:

      • Have a reference transcript of the dictated passage or speech that the test-taker is required to transcribe.
      • Compare the test-taker’s transcription with the reference transcript to identify discrepancies.

      2. Identify Mistakes:

      • Listen or read both the test-taker’s transcription and the reference transcript carefully.
      • Mark discrepancies such as missing words, incorrect words, incorrect punctuation, or other deviations from the reference.

      3. Categorize Mistakes:

      • Divide mistakes into different categories such as:
        • Word Errors: Incorrect words transcribed.
        • Omission: Words or phrases missed out.
        • Insertion: Extra words added.
        • Substitution: Incorrect words used.
        • Punctuation Errors: Incorrect placement or missing punctuation marks.

      4. Calculate Errors:

      • Assign a numerical value to each mistake category based on the severity of the mistake. For example, a substitution might be considered more severe than a minor punctuation error.
      • Count the number of errors in each category.

      5. Calculate Total Errors:

      • Add up the counts from all the categories to get the total number of errors.

      6. Calculate Accuracy:

      • Subtract the total number of errors from the total number of words dictated in the test to get the total correct words.
      • Divide the total correct words by the total number of words dictated, then multiply by 100 to get the accuracy percentage.

      7. Review and Verify:

      • Review the errors to ensure that the categorization and counts are accurate.
      • If there is any doubt, have a second reviewer go through the transcriptions independently to ensure fairness and accuracy.

      8. Provide Feedback:

      • Use the error count and accuracy percentage to provide constructive feedback to the test-taker.
      • Highlight specific areas of improvement and suggest strategies for better accuracy.

It’s important to note that the specific method and criteria for counting mistakes may vary depending on the guidelines set by the shorthand or stenography testing organization. Make sure to follow their instructions and guidelines accurately. Additionally, employing technology such as specialized software or tools designed for transcription assessment can help streamline the process and ensure accurate results.
